Description 

Maine Outdoor Kids provides the opportunity for individuals pursuing outdoor education or youth development the opportunity to grow their skills in leadership, problem solving, outdoor programming. Assistant Guides are responsible for mentoring small groups of campers ranging ages 6-9. Assistant Guides work alongside other Guides and the Managing Director to facilitate group activities and outdoor programming. As caring and reliable role models, Assistant Guides build meaningful and supportive relationships with campers. This position is perfect for a student who wants a summer job but still enjoys some time off (see dates below). 

Qualifications

• At least 16 years old 

• Passionate about working outdoors and youth development

• 2+ years experience working with children

• Must have the ability to communicate clearly and directly with all staff members and campers

• Must have some knowledge of a variety of outdoor recreation activities such as hiking, backpacking, biking or paddling (willing to teach the right candidate)

• Ability to take initiative, work collaboratively, and have an energetic attitude 

• Must be comfortable in the water and have the ability to swim

• Must have Wilderness First Aid or First Aid/CPR Certification (or willing to take a course prior to start date)

• Creative and innovative thinker

• Must uphold the philosophy, goals and standards of Maine Outdoor Kids

• Must be able to attend paid training session on Sunday, June 13th from 9am-1pm and all dates listed below

• Ability to pass a background check 

• Must be able to provide personal and/or professional references

It’s a Plus if You Have

• Experience managing groups of 4 or more children in a recreation setting

• Developing leadership skills (example: a lead role on a sports team or other activity)

• Experience using the Portland Trails system

• Knowledge of Portland and Casco Bay 

• Lifeguard certifications

$12.25/hr + DOE
