Dates: August 14-17 Time: 9am-4pm + overnight Weds Best For: Grades 6-8 Maximum Group Size: 8 Self-directed outdoor play may look different as children enter their middle school years, but it’s just as fundamental to development. Summer Camp with Maine Outdoor Kids is all about supporting your teen’s growth and building their confidence. We do this by finding the sweet spot between allowing space for independence and supporting development. It’s important to us that your child finds their voice through creativity, problem solving & social collaboration. Our team is there to facilitate activities, give choices, and prompt children’s thinking. There is no better atmosphere for this than the outdoors! Over the course of the camp week, children will explore different outdoor locations with energetic & skilled instructors. Teen Adventure week combines 2 days of day camp with a 1-night backpacking trip in the mountains of Maine. * Trips to the beach or islands within Casco Bay provide the opportunity to learn about our oceans, working waterfront, sustainability & history. * Lakes and rivers provide swim spots on hot days and to explore freshwater plants & animals by way of canoe. * Prepare for backpacking overnight by learning about maps, clothing, gear, outdoor cooking and more. * Sports, team building games and other movement-based activities work through some of that physical & emotional energy kids carry. * One night backpacking trip (Weds & Thurs) in the mountains of Maine, hiking ~4-7 miles per day. All meals provided. Gear available. Payment for summer camps is due June 1st. You may select the ‘Pay in Person’ option to pay later, or by check or Venmo (@maineoutdoorkids). Checks save us processing fees. Some basic equipment including comfortable hiking shoes, rain layers and a backpack are needed for this program. You may use your own backpacking gear or borrow from our closet. All MOK programming utilizes public parks, trail systems and green spaces to help connect children and their families to accessible outdoor spaces. The first 2 days of camp we are local, then you will drop off Wednesday morning and not pick up until Thursday afternoon as we had to the mountains. Parents receive the full curriculum with locations emailed out the week before camp, along with packing lists and details. Parents are responsible for transportation to and from camp each day (all locations are within 20min of Portland).
