  • Wednesday: 12:45–5:00 PM

Additional hours are available during school breaks, conference days, and vacation weeks. We follow the Portland Public Schools calendar for after-school programs.

  • At least 2 years of experience working with children (in education, childcare, recreation, or coaching)

  • Enthusiasm for learning and growing with our team

  • Resilience and comfort working outdoors in all seasons and weather

  • Physical ability to stay active, walk short distances, and play

  • Strong communication and leadership skills

  • Experience or interest in outdoor games, crafts, and environmental education

  • Understanding of social-emotional development and child-centered approaches

  • Adaptability, creativity, and problem-solving skills

  • Familiarity with outdoor education philosophies and unstructured nature play

  • Knowledge of Greater Portland’s outdoor spaces (or willingness to learn)

Bonus if you have:

  • Experience teaching sports, crafts, or other skills to kids

  • Education in Early Childhood Development, Outdoor Education, or a related field

Responsibilities:

  • Embody and apply the Maine Outdoor Kids philosophy across all programs

  • Mentor and guide small groups of kids in our After-School Programs, creating a supportive and enriching experience during this key transition time

  • Safely pick up participants from school and walk to nearby outdoor spaces

  • Create a safe, fun, and engaging environment for exploration and play

  • Facilitate seasonal and weather-based outdoor activities

  • Build meaningful relationships with kids, parents and staff

  • Support social-emotional growth through connection and play

  • Provide choice and flexibility to meet kids where they are

  • Share outdoor skills in ways that are inspiring, inclusive, and age-appropriate

Why work with us?

At Maine Outdoor Kids, nature isn’t just our setting — it’s our teacher. Through hands-on experiences outdoors, kids build confidence, curiosity, and connection. As the seasons shift, so do our activities, shaped by the weather, landscape, and the world around us.

Each day, our team shows up with intention and energy, helping kids grow through meaningful experiences and authentic relationships. Whether we're facilitating STEAM challenges, playing in the snow, or identifying animals, we’re creating moments that foster confidence, curiosity, and resilience. These experiences help our staff grow, too — offering daily reminders of the value of presence, play, and the joy that comes from noticing, wondering, and learning alongside the kids as we spend time in nature.

This is meaningful work — it’s hands-on, physical, and requires being fully present. We look for team members who are dependable and eager to be outside in all weather. If you thrive outdoors, have experience working with youth, and are motivated by the power of a shared mission, you’ll be a natural fit.

As a small organization, every voice matters. Your ideas, feedback, and creativity help shape the way we grow. Our close-knit structure fosters strong connections — not just with the kids and families we serve, but with one another. We recognize that everyone brings a unique set of skills and interests to the team. At Maine Outdoor Kids, there are real opportunities to shape your role and grow in a direction that reflects your strengths, passions, and curiosity. We support a growth mindset and encourage continuous learning — whether through leadership, new roles, or expanding your outdoor education skills. We are here to help you develop both personally and professionally in meaningful ways.
