Description 

Maine Outdoor Kids provides the opportunity for individuals pursuing outdoor education or recreation the opportunity to grow their skills in leadership, problem solving, outdoor programming, and safety and supervision. Guides are responsible for mentoring small groups of campers ranging ages 7-14. Guides work alongside the Managing Director to facilitate outdoor activities, social and emotional development and teach wilderness skills. As caring and reliable role models, Guides build meaningful and supportive relationships with campers. This position is perfect for a student who wants a summer job but still enjoys some time off (see dates below). 

 

Qualifications

• At least 18 years old 

• Passionate about youth development and working outdoors

• 2+ years experience working with children in a youth oriented field such as childcare, recreation or education

• Must have the ability to communicate clearly and directly with all staff members and campers

• Must have strong knowledge of a variety of outdoor recreation activities such as hiking, backpacking, biking or paddling

• Ability to take initiative, work collaboratively, and have an energetic attitude 

• Must be comfortable in the water and have the ability to swim

• Must have Wilderness First Aid or First Aid/CPR Certification (or willing to take a course prior to start date)

• Creative and innovative thinker

• Must uphold the philosophy, goals and standards of Maine Outdoor Kids

• Must be able to attend paid training session on Sunday, June 13th from 9am-1pm and dates listed below

• Ability to pass a background check 

• Must be able to provide personal and/or professional references

It’s a Plus if You Have

• Outdoor education training or experience

• Experience leading outdoor activities or wilderness trips

• Experience using the Portland Trails system

• Knowledge of Portland and Casco Bay 

• Lifeguard certifications

M-F, 9am - 3pm (plus 1 staff meeting per week) 31hrs per week

 

Compensation

$14/hr + DOE
